Pallet Truck Shop has hailed Lidl’s latest investment in the UK after the popular retailer announced plans to build its largest UK warehouse in Peterborough. This will measure 754,000 sqft and create 500 new jobs in the local area.
The huge investment comes as part of Lidl’s ambitious expansion plan in Britain, with the big-gun retailer looking to invest a total of £1.75bn in the UK between 2017 and 2018.
Phil Chesworth, Pallet Truck Shop Managing Director, said: “The news of Lidl’s new distribution centre will be welcomed by everyone in the UK as well as the Peterborough area; Lidl is well-known for being a great job creator and pays a fantastic salary to its employees.
“The transport and logistics sectors have been performing extremely strongly as job employers recently with a 6% month-on-month increase in job postings, and Lidl’s new warehouse, which will be their biggest in Britain, is a brilliant example of the success of our industry.”
Lidl has gone from strength to strength in the UK over the last 10 years and, along with its sister company Aldi, accounts for almost £1 for every £8 spent in supermarkets in Britain. 10 years ago, they took in just £1 in every £25.
The German-owned company’s latest new warehouse will bring its total of distribution centres in Britain up to 15, with more and more customers turning to the store in recent years thanks to its budget prices. Lidl have also announced the creation of three more distribution centres in Britain this year, including a 63,000 sqft logistics centre in Doncaster, a site in Motherwell to supply Scotland and a further project in Exeter to bolster its operations in the south west.
Phil added: “It’s brilliant to see such an abundance of new logistics and distribution jobs in the UK and even more encouraging that companies such as Lidl plan to continue investing in our country next year too.”
