With cold weather ahead, the health of workers needs to be a priority – and this is not just about seasonal illnesses. Pallet Truck Shop, the UK’s largest supplier of manual handling equipment such as pallet trucks, stackers and table trucks, is urging warehouse operators to take proactive steps to winter-proof their operations.
From battery performance and floor safety to worker wellbeing, the company warns that cold weather can quickly compromise both operational efficiency and worker safety if left unaddressed.
The winter months bring a unique set of challenges for logistics and warehousing. Cold and damp conditions can reduce the efficiency of electric handling equipment, while condensation and melting ice can create slippery floors, increasing the risk of workplace accidents. At the same time, lower temperatures can take a toll on staff working long shifts in unheated or partially open facilities, with consequences on morale, productivity and, most crucially, health.
“Winter can be one of the toughest times of year for warehouse teams,” said Phil Chesworth, Managing Director of Pallet Truck Shop. “Battery-powered equipment can lose efficiency in cold conditions, surfaces can become hazardous, and staff can feel the strain of working in chillier environments. Preparation is key: a few simple measures taken now can make the difference between smooth operations and costly disruptions.”
Chesworth recommends that businesses carry out pre-winter checks on all manual and electric handling equipment, paying particular attention to battery maintenance and tyre condition. Ensuring batteries are stored and charged in warm, dry conditions can help preserve performance, while regular inspections can prevent faults caused by condensation or fluctuating temperatures.
Floor safety should also be a priority. Simple actions such as increasing floor cleaning schedules, ensuring anti-slip mats are in place at key access points, and providing adequate lighting can dramatically reduce accident risk. Pallet Truck Shop also notes the importance of using equipment designed for demanding winter conditions, such as pallet trucks with robust wheels and corrosion-resistant components.
“Warehouse safety doesn’t stop at equipment,” Chesworth added. “Managers should also think about their people. Warm PPE, proper hydration, and scheduled breaks can go a long way to keeping staff safe when the temperatures fall.”
