Pallet Truck Shop, the UK’s largest supplier of pallet trucks and manual stackers, has welcomed the government’s newly announced apprenticeship reforms as an important step forward for the logistics and warehousing sector.
With changes set to create up to 10,000 additional apprenticeships annually, the company believes the sector is well-positioned to benefit from a fresh influx of apprentices.
Phil Chesworth, Managing Director of Pallet Truck Shop, praised the changes. He said, “These apprenticeship reforms are exactly what the industry needs. By reducing red tape and allowing more flexibility in entry requirements, the government is making vocational training more accessible and attractive to potential apprentices.
“Warehousing and logistics rely heavily on skilled workers, and this move will help drive the sector forward by creating a stronger talent pipeline.”
The new reforms are expected to encourage more individuals to pursue vocational training and upskill in critical industries, including logistics, which continues to face a growing demand for skilled workers. One of the key elements of the reform is the removal of the mandatory Level 2 English and maths qualification for apprentices to pass unless deemed necessary by employers.
This adjustment will allow apprentices to focus on acquiring job-specific skills while earning a wage – a change that is expected to be particularly beneficial for the logistics sector, where hands-on experience is invaluable.
The government has also announced a reduction in the minimum apprenticeship duration from 12 months to 8 months, effective from August 2025, pending legislation. This reform aims to fast-track workers into essential roles, ensuring businesses can benefit from trained staff more quickly. The flexibility on English and maths requirements is already in effect.
“A workforce that is skilled, adaptable, and ready to meet demand is crucial,” added Chesworth. “These changes will not only help bring new talent into logistics but will also support ongoing growth in the sector.”
With apprenticeships remaining a vital entry point into logistics, Pallet Truck Shop sees the reforms as a welcome step towards closing the UK’s skills gap
